Hi i have a R50e series IBM laptop and a Sony Bravia 32' lcd tv. I am connecting them using a Vga cable for video and RCA 3.5mm cable for audio. But the problem is i am not able to hear any sound. i have tested the cable and they are working. It would be great if someone could help me figure out the problem. Thanks in advance.

Have you checked the tv settings ? You might have to enable audio-in.
Have you checked the laptop line-out volume setting?
Tried connect the laptop line-out to another audio device to see if it work?

There may be a setting on the TV that tells it which audio input to use when viewing VGA. Make sure it's set to the right audio port. For example, it might be set to an optical input rather than the analog input.

Thank you for the responses, So i checked the tv manual and there is a port for audio, but there is only one slot and i have two wires, i think it is a optical port. So is there any way to switch from optical to another analog audio input in the tv. If there is no way, then what kind of wire should i use to connect to the optical audio input.

  6. An optical audio port is squarish with a little door:

Is that what you have? Does your computer have an optical output?

Hi jagabo, the port is circular and does not look like the optical port in the picture. maybe it is a analog port, but the thing is there is only one port and i have one red and one white wire, like the analog port shown in the picture. So can i change the setting in some way to use other analog input ports.

If it's a small round hole about the same size as the hole in the middle of the analog RCA connectors (red and white) in the above picture it's probably a stereo mini pin plug. That's probably what your laptop has too. In which case you need a mini pin plug to mini pin plug cable like this:
