    Hi,

Just wondering if one can help me. Well, I hope so!
I have recently bought this LG writer, and replaced my old NEC-writer. Now it is on the secondary IDE channel with a Toshiba SD-R1002 DVD-ROM/CD-RW. The LG is Master, Toshiba is Slave, just as it was with the NEC writer.
When I inserted it, WinXP has recognised it fine, but it would not have read any disc, only the FAT-table was read, very slowly.
The shop assistant advised me setting up XP again. Done it, now I can play DVDs with Nero Showtime, but nor Nero, nor DVDShrink would read any CD or DVD, in fact, they do not even recognise the disc as DVD, not even tried writing one! Also, AudioCDs do not play with MediaPlayer.
I checked the DMA settings, Toshiba is Multi-word DMA-2, LG is DMA-4 Ultra-66.
Any idea? Should I return it to the shop as the hardware is faulty?

OK, Toshiba seems to be the ugly one
I have replaced it with the NEC-writer and now everything is fine and sunny.
Except, that both drives are set by XP to Ultra DMA2... But they both WORK!
Can I set it to higher? Or just leave it as it is?

Your first post you stated the LG drive was in DMA 4 mode but now it's in DMA 2 mode. Most newer dvd burners require a 80 wire ide cable in order for the drives to function correctly. Buy a new 80 wire ide cable and see if the LG dvd burner will be DMA 4 mode. Those 80 wire ide cables can fail.
Also make sure you have the jumpers in the back of the drives set correctly to either master or slave settings.

OK, I am back from holiday and from Uni for this weekend.
So, originally, after re-installing XP it was DMA4, but when I replaced the Toshiba-writer to the NEC, XP suddenly changed the settings to DMA2... But now they work.
    I will try another ide-cable

    Thanks for your help!
