Those of you who remember the heady days of the Amiga may remember a 3D modeling tool called Caligari. Over time Caligari moved to the PC platform in the shape of Truespace, and while it never was able to compete with the likes of 3ds max, XSI and Lightwave, it continued to add features and functionality (hair, physics, optically correct lighting and rendering etc) to keep it in line with modern 3d tools. Version 7 saw the start of a complete re-write of the underlying code to increase speed and add new features and improvements. Last year Caligari was purchased by Microsoft, with some of it's underlying technologies being incorporated into M$'s challenge to Google Maps/Google Earth - Virtual Earth.
Caligari have just released version 7.6, their first under the new ownership arrangements. While it brings many improvements and new features, it also brings a new price tag : it is free. You can download it by registering with Caligari : http://caligari.com/ There are three components totaling around 300 MB - the modeler, a pdf manual, and 132 MB of tutorial videos.
For those of you that find Blender a little daunting, or just want to try something different in 3D, it may be worth a look.
