HELP, trying to do Tape to DVD dub on RDR-VX555

I'm trying to help a friend out with a RDR-VX555 that he has.
Apparently it worked only once. He has the manual on this unit and I followed directions to the word. Both ways using the one button touch to go from Tape to DVD and the menu way in dubbing from Tape to DVD. In both cases the unit just sits there with the vhs paused and the DVD not doing anything. When I stick a new DVD it will format it to VR mode I think but then it just sits there along with the VHS in pause. Anyone have this unit experience this problem? Not sure what else to try. I did try varies media, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW etc etc etc. Any ideas anyone? He just trying to copy over VHS tape that he recorded before over the years.

I think I figured something out. I decided to feed an external source to see if it will even burn a DVD and that worked. I then tried a tape internally and it appears to work at the moment now. hmmmm.
