Sorry if this is in the right area but I figure its audio related and this is the best forum I know for such a question. I have long audio files, an hour each that I would like to break down in to 5 minute segments. It would make the files much easier to scan on my mp3 player.

Is there an easy way to do this? What program is recommended? Id rather not have to make each cut manually if possible

thanks for your assistance in advance

mp3DirectCut will do this without re-encoding the file, so it's very fast and there's no quality loss (not sure if Audacity can do it without re-encoding; maybe it can).

Open your file in mp3DirectCut, then click on "Special...Auto Cue" and set your split time to 5:00. Then "File...Save split" and you'll have options for naming the pieces and where to put them.

    And it's free, like Audacity.

If you want something a litle slicker and with more options, I used to use "MP3 Splitter and Joiner" from http://www.ezsoftmagic.com/ a few years ago. It's also fast and doesn't re-encode, but it costs $20. I used it to cut up a 4-hour daily radio show into 5 minute chunks to listen to at work on my mp3 player; made fast-forward and rewinding a breeze. I got pissed when they tried to charge me for a version upgrade a few months after I bought it. It worked well, though. But for your purposes, mp3DirectCut should be all you need.

Audacity decompresses everything, and you have to recompress to MP3.

MP3DirectCut is the best tool for this, and much faster. It can also change the volume losslessly.

  5. I think there is something called mp3splitter or simlarly which did exactly what you would like to do in an automatic manner. However I would stick with mp3directcut since it allows one to set exactly where to cut, i.e. you would not have a word broken between 2 files.
