Save between diffrent encoder

Is a little hard to say but I going to give a try anyway

If I have a clip that I have been encoder in LAVC but now I want to make a new clip but save it in H.264 and I want to have same quality as I have in LAVC, are they going to be same size of the file or if H.264 better to save my clip and can make the file smaller???


I have not try it yet if I use same bitrate that I use when I save it in LAVC but now in H.264 if the file going to be same size or same quality.

I hope someone understand what I mean

it'll be the same size.
same bitrate = same size.

so you have clipA and you went to -> lavc encode
and now you want clipA-> h264
?
if so,
yes h264 copresses better,
so you can have a smaller size at similar quality, or better quality at the same size,
depending.
what are you aiming for anyway?
size or quality? which way are you willing to compromise?
you can do things either way.

if however you meant
clipA-> lavc encode -> h264 encode.
then you're doing things the wrong way.

Yes is that I want to have.
I think I have ok quality when I use LAVC but I was thinking about try to have same quality but in H.264 and have smaller file.

The problem is I dont know how smaller I can get and what bitrate I have to use to get it.

I use Xvid calculator to get what bitrate I need to have on a specific size of the file and I have found if I use a bitrate that is 1044 is good quality so I can guess the H.264 is not so big bitrate but how much I dont know.

i suggest you go through this the jagabo way.

take your original clip.
find some nice x264 settings.

start encoding a sample with -crf (constant quality) instead of by bitrate.
say -crf 18 and start increasing that value,
until you reach a quality or roughly the size you can live with.
either or.

the process will give you a the best idea of what you want.
