Nero burning DVDs from the outside in?

Hi all, this may sound weird, but I have been backing up my files on several DVDs today. I understand that a DVD burner, and also CD burners burn the disc from the inside edge to the outside. Most of the Discs I've burned have been all single layer Sony DVD+RW discs. Many of the discs have been around the 3.7 to 4.3 Gig burns, and have been burned from the inside to the outside.

The last few I've burned have all the data burned from the outside edge, with the centre of the discs unburned, like the one pictured below.



Is this a normal thing, or is my Nero playing up?

I've checked my discs on another computer and they seem to be accessible with no problems, but I've never come past this before.

Serious answer. Absolutely impossible. Nothing could read it. It would appear as a blank disk.

but yeah, it's really bizarre, why would the recorder skip the first quarter or third of the disc, then burn on the last three quarters?

I've checked some of my movie discs, and even some of them are the same.

I'm using an older version of Nero:
Nero Digitol 3.1.0.16
Nero Ultra Edition 6.6.0.15
Nero Recode CE 2.2.6.17
(Nero 8 has heaps of bugs)

So yeah, sometimes it burns on the first portion of the disc, and other times it burns on the last portion.

That sounds as bizare as "Nintendo Gamecube discs are read in reverse - from the outside to the inside". Nothing is further from the truth.

You may be seeing a dark area, causing a break in the burned layer.

This has been discussed many times in this forum, and is attributed to a change in burn speed during the burn.

To test this: Slow your burn down to 4X and see what happens.

I like burning discs at a slower speed, so they were all burned at 2.4x. Unwritten area, is definitely on the inner ring area. With the Sony Rewritables, it's a lighter gray, and the Verbatims, it's more of a reddish, with the purplely part on the outer. Seeing I've got no problem playing them back, it's more of a curiosity thing then a concern.

If you have discuss this before, would you please post the links, I did do a search on Yahoo and google for "burned DVD" and "outer area", and got no results.

Unwritten area, is definitely on the inner ring area.

You could always purposely damage the "unwritten" inner area and see what happens. My bet is that the disc will not be readable.

I suggest that you very carefully examine the area between your keyboard and your chair. I suspect you will find a very serious problem there. If necessary, you might ask someone to help you with this inspection. It might be a bit too much for you.

However, I've seen similar burnt disc "effect" on few occasions.
On DVD9 writable discs, it is possible it *may appear* like the inner part of the disc wasn't written: when first layer has very tiny amount of data while 2nd layer is fully packed (this would require user to intentionally master such disc, since all programs would fill the 1st layer first, AFAIK)
Another possibility is as someone already said earlier - burning speed zones may create such "visual effect" on the disc too, where the inner portion of the disc may look like unburnt to untrained eye...

Burning from the outside in, no way.

However -

Burning from the inside out, BUT starting at a much further-out point than standard, yeah, that could happen.

As stated, wrong conclusion.

Those stating that you could not be seeing what you are seeing are equally wrong.
