Hello! I just bought my husband an LCD tv for father's day. I'm trying to set everything up, and I can't seem to get it to work. I bought a Dynex 42 inch lcd, I have a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 cable box (I'll actually be getting an HD cable box on Monday, but I'm assuming set up for the dvd player will be the same), and a Magnavox vhs-dvd recorder. On my old RCA tv, I had it set up so that the dvd player and cable could run at the same time (enabling me to record directly from the tv to my dvd player), but with the new tv it seems that I need to change the input to get it to work. I used to have the dvd player on in order to watch tv and now I don't, so obviously something is connected differently. Since I have to change the input for the DVD player to show up on the tv, I'm not able to record from the tv. I must be doing something wrong.
I currently have the tv connected to the cable box with a coaxial cable, and the dvd recorder connected to the tv with AV wires. I have to change my input to "AV" through the tv to have access to the dvd recorder. What do I do?!?!? All help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

    Paragraphs please.

HD will be different. The DVD Recorder can't record or pass HD video. It needs a separate path. If you aren't trying to record a separate program from that being viewed, the following connection will be used.

Cable to HD cable box (e.g. 8300HD). HDMI to HDTV. Composite or S-Video+audio (A/V) to DVD recorder*.

Then connect the DVD Recorder S-Video or composite +audio output to HDTV analog input.

This allows the DVD recorder to record what is being fed to the TV or dub DVR recordings.

To watch DVD player output**, switch TV input from HDMI to A/V in.

    * The composite/S-Video output will be downscaled letterbox when tuned to HD channels.

** There are two composite outputs. The first always shows the cable box tuner to TV output. The second allows dubbing from the DVR while watching another live channel (advanced topic).
