i've been on most nntp servers. by far the most reliable has always been easynews. giganews might be number 2, uns, forte, astra, tera, newshosting pretty much third tier for reliablity. but it also depends on what you need from your nntp server. anonymous, cheap, unfettered posting? uns or astra.

Probably has something to do with that, I can assume they took it a step further and/or used it as an excuse to drop the service. -
I have Earthlink and they did a good thing lately. They stopped pretending that they were willing have their own News servers. First they switched to SuperNews which was a big improvement. Better yet they recently switched to GigaNews which has much better retention.
Just about service will deal with the non-binaries though. You can even use Google.
http://groups.google.com/
Which might do it for the cooking.
A good site for information on Newsgroups and News servers.

Yes indeed Mr Coal thats what they are doing, lying again and pretending to do one thing and then doing another to make bigger bucks.
at least they are not doing the cable thing and charging by the bits and bytes
thanks for all the help. Ill get a 'premium' newserver hopefully for around 12/m for the groups I like

A couple of free news servers:
http://www.teranews.com/
Costs $4 one time to register, then free.
http://news.aioe.org/
Completely free.
Both only carry text news groups.
Occasionally they do go off the air.
Teranews a few times a year, aioe only once recently for a couple of days.
The big advantage over Google is you can use a normal NNTP newsreader and filter out spam (the MI5 lunatic, the Chinese watch and shoe ads, your local trolls, .... etc) -
Rotus,
I use
Usenetserver.com
I was on the 14.95 plan, but since the advent of torrent,
I have now downsized to the $3 per 48 period plan.
Great retention, fast ( when using NZB, but still good through normal
newsreader), and a huge selection of binary/multimedia groups.
