Is it possible to reduce the volume of the music score on, for example, an avi file or rip a DVD and edit it that way? I ask as sometimes I dislike the loudness of the score on a TV programme or movie and wish that I could reduce the volume without affecting the dialogue or sound f/x - I doubt if it's possible seeing as everything is mixed together, but no harm in asking.
It would of course be much simpler if DVDs were simply provided with the score as a separate entity, but I guess that's never going to happen.

You'd have to rip the video and demux the audio.
Then you could try "normalising" filters on the audio track. These can reduce the dynamic range, so the loud parts are lowered in volume, while quieter sounds are not reduced.
Then remix back with your original video.
