So I'm attempting to record footage from video games and cut them into a movie/mini series. I need help with just about everything. Getting good quality recordings, the only good quality I can get is MP4, and that has the problem of not being able to be edited.

So I need help getting good quality captures and/or editing MP4.

Note: Converting the MP4 to other file formates lowers the quality DRAMATICALLY.

    Thanks for any help.

Some information about how you are capturing would help. That seems to be the main area of concern. MP4 takes a fair bit or processing, so I am surprised that is your best and only capture option

I've tried capturing to my graphics card (ATI All-in-wonder 1800XL) and I've tried through a Dazzle. The only good capture settings I can get are MP4's. Everything else looks like crap.

I've tried camstudio, but it has a really low resolution, which isn't what I am going for.

Just reading, the ATI AIW doesn't have hardware encoding, its all done by the CPU so if your computers CPU isn't that great then its struggling to capture and encode and run your computer at the same time

Possibly why your final capture isn't that great

Found this link though that might help in recording to an AVI which is better to edit as a lot more software support AVI plus some support direct AVI editing so you don't have to re-encode again

    http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/capture/atiavi/atiavi.htm

Also, this link that shows how to set up your card to capture as VCD format and also suggest NOT to use the supplied software. I assume becuase they have found out how terrible it can be

    Hope that helps

That is kind of my last ditch effort and I have already spent money on stuff that I, at least thought, could use to do what I need. If in the end, I can find a way to make this work with what I've got, I'll have to save for that. Money is tight right now, or I might have already tried that option.

Thanks for everyone so far with their help, I'll keep you all posted if I can manage to make things work.
