Panasonic DMRES45V DVD remote doesn't work correctly

Every time I press the PLAY button or any button on the remote the SET 1 message appears on the DVD display window. I have tried to point the remote controler at the TV and held the remote POWER TV button down, and at the same time entered the manufacturer code 0051 for Panasonic then I tried code 0250, I get the same results; I did the same thing when I pointed the controler at the DMRES45V unit and got the same results. When I select TV Power, or play I get the SET 1 displayed in the DMRES45V display window; when I select other buttons the same thing happens. My remote was working in the morning. The battries are OK as I tested them in a toy and the toy power operated OK. Is my remote Belly up?
The DMRES45V unit works manually from the front pannel operating buttons.
Any ideas?

Try this. Remove the batteries from the remote, exercise all of the buttons by pressing them a couple of times, put the batteries back in and try again. I would also purchase a fresh set of batteries and install them.

Your remote control code is not matched to your DVD recorder.
