what to do when a relatively new dvd recorder doesn't function correctly?

sometimes it works fine, sometimes it doesn't. all i get half the time is a 'bye' (says that on the dvd recorder) and i have to switch it off and on a few times (at the mains). i can only access the play menu if i press play on the remote. it says 'exit l' on the dvd recorder and i can't do nothing but press play.

do these companies actually test these before they sell them?

You return it and get another.

Most stores will replace items in the first 30 days. Beyond that it needs to go to a factory warranty service center.
