  1. I was looking at the Kingwell DVD player because it does upconversion over component. It also claims to do a HD format called HDV, which I am guessing is CH-DVD.

So, is there any info out there at all about their HD format, and (wishful thinking) any Blu-ray to HDV converters?

I'll pay $140 for upconversion over component, but being able to convert Blu-ray to HDV (and burn) would be a bonus.

Anyone know about the HD format the the Kingwell player uses?

I am vaguely familiar with this format because I saw a review of a Helios DVD player that can play these discs. They are burned to DVD-9 and contain 720p video. The Helios reviewer was not a hard core video guy, so his review provided no real technical details on the format. I don't believe this format is the same as CH-DVD, but I can't say with certainty. One of the discs that Kingwell sells (the birds one) used to be given away with the Helios player, but no longer is.

Okay... so the HVD format is really a 720p mpeg2 DVD (rather than 480p mpeg 2?? in a typical DVD VOB)? So the real problem would be ripping the MPEG-2/MPEG-4 AVC/SMPTE VC-1 VOBs (or whatever blu-ray uses... I can research that) and then converting/reencoding/compressing the VOBs to mpeg2 720p, and then converting back to VOB and burning to DVD-9 (Dual Layer DVD)?

I'll have to research some of it. I am trying to figure out if there will be the possibility of archiving Blu-Ray movies on dual layer DVD (DVD-9). 720p would still look pretty darned good.

Most Blu Ray movies are 25-30GB so you would have to compress to 8GB.
Sure it will be 720 but there will be artifacts, you might as well buy the SD version.
Then there is the fact that BD players don't support HD on DVDR....unlike HD DVD players.
