Last night I edited a few DV clips with Vegas 8, saved them as mpeg2, brought them into Nero Vision to create chapters and the menu system and then burned a DVD. I had figured that Nero would just do a quick transcode on the stream as it was already mpeg2, but it took a long time which got me wondering if Nero was recompressing the stream.

Does anyone know what Nero is doing that is taking so long?

There is a checkbox somewhere in Nero that tells it not to re-encode compliant files. Some people believe it works, and perhaps it does some of the time. However there are enough reported instances where it doesn't to suggest it is, at best, a crap shoot.

If you need a free alternative for authoring, checkout GUIForDVDAuthor or DVD Styler, then burn with Imgburn.

When I used to use Nero, it re-encoded everything, even though I checked the "Do not re-encode compliant" box.

Nothing I had was compliant as far as Nero was concerned. Typically took 45 minutes to re-encode and 12 minutes to burn.
