In Firefox, if you go to Tools->Options and uncheck the "Load images automatically" box, do image files still transfer to your computer, but just not get displayed in the browser, or does Firefox do something along the lines of not requesting the image files from the server hosting the web page?

  2. The latter. The intent is to save on download times. In the early/mid 90s, it was common to disable images because most people used dial-up. The place where the image goes is shown and you can manually download it.

  3. I use this for remote desktop. Comes in real handy.

I was actually wishing it did this, but it doesn't seem to. I was hoping there would be little blank boxes that I could right click on and select something like "download/show image", but there's nothing on the page indicating where the images would be if I had them enabled.

I use Img Like Opera extension:

    https://addons.mozilla.org/ru/firefox/addon/1672

In bottom right corner it puts a small icon (changing its appearance in different modes) for selecting one of 4 options (from 'load no image' to 'load any image').

Okay, I tried both of those, I like the "Img Like Opera" one better. It seems to wait until I right click on an image placeholder and select "load image" to actually download the image file, which is awesome, if true.
