I downloaded IE8 and usually when you open a new tab or go to "Tools", you can select In-Private browsing. However, this is not highlight (so cannot select). When I open a new tab, there is no option either. I tried googling but couldn't find the reason why my private browsing function is disabled.

Access points for "In-Private browsing" in Ie8
1: Tools > toolbars > menu bar = under tools
2: Safety
In the case it's disabled try
1: Tools > Internet options > Advanced tab > Reset button ... when done close Ie8 and re-open ... check again
2: Parental settings may be involved ... check and make changes to enable ... or
3: Read this link on how to change the value in the registry to enable / disable it -
I tried reset button but does not solve it.
I tried the link where I typed
- [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Int ernet Explorer\Privacy]
"EnableInPrivateBrowsing"=dword:00000001
to enable it and when I double click it asks if I want to add to registry. When I click yes it says1: Tools > toolbars > menu bar = under tools
"cannot import. The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry importer."
Anyone know what is going on?

did you create a file that ended in .reg? and contained these 3 lines?
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Int ernet Explorer\Privacy]
"EnableInPrivateBrowsing"=dword:00000001

I did use all 3 lines but still nothing. I wonder if I should just uninstall and reinstall?

I uninstalled and reinstalled but nothing. I have tried resetting the settings and tried adding to registry. Has anyone else had this problem?

Only time Ive seen similar results is because the person was running windows media center.
The binary problem
When creating the key in registry go down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Int ernet Explorer
Click to highlight it and then > edit > new key ... called Privacy
Click to highlight "Privacy" and then > edit > new dword value ... name is EnableInPrivateBrowsing
Next double click this new value and change the "value data" to 1 ... click ok to finish
Done ... of course here's the binary file
