I have followed many tutorials on the net about making video clips i have downloaded into the correct format for VCD. Well, i used nero to make the VCD and it said that it could conver the files for me, to the right format. I did that, took about an hour to convert and burn the files onto the VCD. i used Lalim VCD player on my computer, and it works fine, then i go put it in my Panasonic RV-20 dvd player, and it says no disc. Can somebody help me? I am not new to computers, or anything like that, you can use technical terms.... i am just new to making VCDs. thanks.

Also, i burned the VCD at 4x (although i have an 8x burner), and followed the direction on the left for using nero to burn VCDs. What is the difference between VCD and SVCD? Could this be my problem? Also, i burned it with Track at Once. Is this wrong? The tutorial says either will work.
Thanks for your help! -
One more thing, sorry... i keep thinking of more things after i post.
The resoluction of the files i am using is 352x240, and two if the video clips are 352x288. Does this make a difference? Does NERO take the file and convert the FPS and the Resolution and all that to make it work? Is it a "turn-key" solution? The VCD plays on my computers... but not in my stand alone panasonic RV20 or my XBOX. This is frustrating... i have gone through 5 CDs trying to figure this stuff out on my own.... what am i doing wrong?? -
Your DVD player just might not like the discs you're using. I had the same problem with my Sony NS300. When I tried playing a VCD on Memorex 700 CDRs, it wouldn't work, but when I played one on a FujiFilm 700, worked just fine. CDRW's seem to work for virtually all standalone DVD players.
Check out the Compatablity list, I took the liberty of doing the search for you...

Looks like you've got a real fidgety DVD player. Try burning them to a good label CDRW. (I suggest buying a singlet of a couple brands). When you find one that works, stock up. :D -
Thanks for the reply. Its 4:00 in the morning here, and i have been worknig on this crap since midnight! grr...
Anyway, i burned the VCD on a TDK 80min (700mb) CD-R.
So your saying i should try burning it on a CD-RW? I'll give that a shot and see if it works. does it matter if its an 650meg or 700meg CD?
One more thing, should i burn it with track at once or disc at once? or does it matteR? What about the resolution? If the resolustion doesnt fir the TV exactly, will i just have black space like on a wide-screen formatted DVD on a standrd TV?
Thank you!! -
West Coaster huh? Me too.
Yea, burn it to a CDRW. The size only matters when you're trying to fit things on. (ie, if your finished product is more than 650mb, then a CDRW 650 isn't going to work. :)
As for your other question, Track-At-Once. And make sure you click FINALIZE CD. (or whatever Nero's variation of that is.)
There's a page in here that talks about stretching the Widescreens into the Fullscreens, but the address escapes me. It's most likely in the FAQ somewhere. -
Found it:
I want a fullscreen movie, if the source is in WideScreen and you want it to be in FullScreen you just select under Advanced under Video Arange Method: No margin(keep aspect ratio) and TMPGEnc will then cut left and right so it will fit FullScreen. -
Thank you.... its burning now... we'll see how it turns out. I think its bedtime now. heh... i'll test it out in the morning... encoding and burning takes about an hours.... i have a gig of ram and a 750mhx p3.... think i'll have to go to a p4 or something if i want to keep doing this video stuff....
thanks again! I'll let ya know how it turns out.

Well the second time i made the CD i used a CD-RW, and it worked perfect! I also made a menu to go along with it. Works very nice. I have noticed the only way to access the files from the menu is to punch the number in with the keypad.... the menu isnt like a hyperlink to the file. is that normal? Is there a way to make it a hyperlink?
I made this CD using video clips from the net.... i think i might try to make my own VCD from video i have taken with my vid camera. Is there something i can do to insure the best quality? Like when ripping the video with my TV input card, should i capture it at a certain FPS or RESOLUTION, or maybe a certain file type? I think my input card captures video in AVI format. Making VCDs is fun... woo hoo.. i did it! heh

According to the compatibility list for your dvd player, the cd-rw that you use could make a difference. I drove myself crazy trying to get cd-r and cd-rw (tried numerous brands) to work on my RCA standalone player. Compatibility showed that the cd-rw would work. But it wouldn't work on mine. I gave up and went and bought an APEX dvd player from Wal-Mart for $80. It will play anything that I put in it. VCD,SVCD, any type of cd-r, cd-rw, and even vcd's that are not compliant. It plays what my dvd-rom on my computer won't. This is just a suggestion if you really want to watch them on a standalone with your TV and those cd-rw discs don't work out for ya.
