My PC recently purchased also has a shut down problem, but with a twist. so far the shut down happens EVERY 13 days for 4-5 hour period. in between it works fine. When this happens, the fan gets loud, then shuts down. system reboots itself, runs for an hour, then does it again. after the 4-5 hour period, it stops and all is well for next 2 weeks. very strange. would this not happen more intermittently if it was the problems described above?

bought on Oct 12 2007. had this problem 3 times now 13 days apart. due again on Dec 3rd.

    PC is a gateway GT5628

    thanks

First, you should start your own thread.

Second, is it just rebooting or completely shutting down? Shutting down would be an indication of a hardware problem, and since it is new, I would exchange it or have it sent in for service. Rebooting could be numerous things. Most likely is some sort of software running which has a timer and/or trial period. It could be trying to update, deactivate, or whatever but it is having issues and crashing (BSOD)...which in XP appears as a reboot because BSOD messages are disabled by default (Vista could be similar, but I don't know for sure). If you have access to the Event Viewer, you could check for error messages around the time of the previous issues. It may tell you what is happening.

thank you. I did not know if I should have started a new thread or not, my problem seemed related. it is NOT a hard shutdown. it reboots with the screen for choice of normal, safe mode etc.

thanks for the advice - I did activate the trial version of office S & T software for 60 days

ok I looked at event viewer and traced my event to #6008 if that means anything

I split your post to a new topic. You will generally get more replies that way.

With a new PC under warranty, you don't want to make any irreversible changes, but otherwise you might look to http://pcdecrapifier.com/ to get rid of all the useless junk that OEMs put in new computers. Most all of it is crippled or time limited or just blatant advertising.

    And welcome to our forums.

Are you certain it's not related to Vista updates?

It may be they've put something in 'Task Scheduler'. With Vista, it's in 'Control panels>Administrative tools'. It should list most common tasks that run in a cycle. You can check for the last 30 days to see what was run.

3-1-08 update - I found a BLOG with folks having the same problem. seems it is traced to the firmware BIOS on the schrodertown (sp) motherboard. gateway has a patch which seems to work for most people. I did it today - hope for the best

    Hey man !!
I have same problem with my pc gateway GT5628, and i'm not sure why it does to shut pc off by itself and i don't like it.
I bought mine new from bestbuy store with ne 22'' monitor package and with tax i paid oraud $1340.00 and i'm exspecting better pc for that amount of money.

the only thing i figure out that if it will start turning my pc OFF every 20 min what I would do is to reinstal my vedeo card drivers and then it will stop that mess.
what i'm going right now is waiting 3 more days before will be 14 days since no problem, but i know it will happen again. I spoke with the bestBuy geek guy he said could be a power supply or the video card he is not sure till they run test.
Normaly it's a crapy test i don't belive in them. the only reason i didn't took yet is i don't want to be with out PC for many weeks because those guys slow as could be but while PC is only 6 m old i think i should find the answer or i better buy a protection plan for 200$ and also they said if they can't figure out they have to sent to GATEWAY =(

CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME ABOUT THAT INFO THAST GATEWAY TOLD YOU.
    DID IT WORK?
DID YOU ASK THEM IF ALOT OF PEOPLE HAD SAME PROBLEM WITH THIS PC?

PLEASE ANSWER AS FAST YOU CAN!!

    THANKS
