Stop me if this is covered in another thread (with a link, naturally). And sorry, if this is the case. I tried searching and looking but didn't have much luck. Some similar topics were found but didn't seem to find one that exactly fits.

I have a double-sided, single-layer dvd I am trying to back-up onto 1 dual/double-layered dvd+r. I tried a few different programs thus far -- DvdShrink, Nero Burn and a couple other simple things I have. Essentially, I want to have the entire contents of each side of the dvd put on one dvd+r dl and have all the menus, etc, functional. One way, I think it was with the Nero program, seemed to think the vobs, IFOs, etc were the same files being added twice and wanted me to replace the existing files dragged over.

Would burning these as ISO files work, I'm wondering? Is this possible? And, what is recommended?

    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for the reply.

What about some freeware-type app that can do the same thing?

There's none, even commercial ones (not that I know of), that can do exactly the same thing in one-click. However, you can imitate similar combined DVD structure with PgcEdit (freeware) but it's a lot of work. You want free, then you have to do more work.

What exactly do you have on this dual sided single layer DVD? A VERY old DVD from the early days where they split a movie into halves with half on each side? Or maybe a 90 or so minute movie on one side and a completely different movie on the other side? See it makes a difference because if you have different movies on each side, the menus will be different too. If you are trying to join 2 different movies with different menus into 1 dual layer DVD, you will have to re-author the disc and create new menus for it. You'll need commercial software for that. If you have a movie that was split in half and if the menus are really identical on each half, it is possible to rejoin the movie onto a dual layer DVD. I am sure I saw a guide on this at http://www.doom9.net, but their Guides section is currently down. I suggest you look there for it if and only if you are trying to rejoin 2 halves of the same movie.

DVDFabPlatinum can join 2 discs to 1 DL. It has a free trial period, I haven't tried that option though.

DVDFab Platinum cannot join 2 discs to 1. It can merge several titles in one disc just like DvdShrink's Reauthor mode. However, DvdShrink's Reauthor mode can combine titles from different folders to one disc, whereas DVDFabPlatinum cannot.

Two separate features, one on each side. Each film is barely over an hour each, that's why it each fits on a single-layered side.

DVD Remake with it's top level choice menu is by far the simplest.

personally, unless the menus are something spectacular, I would re-author and create a new menu myself. Much faster that trying to tie it together in PGCEdit.
