You know I had a problem with MPEG-2s and vegas.
I am thinking about trying PinnacleStudioUltimate11 instead.
Does is playback and support MPEG-2 audio and video?

Your problem was AC3 audio, so you might want to specify that.

You can read the tech specs here : http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/uk/Products/Consumer+Products/Home+Video/Studio+...pecifications/

    (Thanks, google)

    Note - imports : Video - mpeg-2, Audio - wav or mp3 - no AC3.

So you will still have to convert your audio to wav, in which case you could still use Vegas.

Or you could try Ulead VideoStudio Plus, which says it can use DVD camcorder footage for input.

Of course, given the problem with Vegas is specific to your machine, there is no guarantee that changing software will solve your problem.

I been demo-ing EditStudio 6. I think its worth looking at it seems to compare to Final Cut and Edius at a quarter the cost. Very easy to pick up and learn too.

Edited add on... Doesn't Pinnacle offer a plug in for AC-3 audio? Or am I thinking of dolby.

  4. When I foolishly bought Pinnacle Studio 9 there was a plug-in I had to buy to use AC3 audio. I never did get Pinnacle 9 to successfully author a single DVD. Having said that, I think Pinnacle has changed hands a couple of times since version 9 so I hope the current version actually works now.

Yeah I've actually been using Pinnacle Studio 11 Ultimate too and I haven't encountered any problems with it. It supports mpeg 2 and I believe they fixed the bug with the AC3 audio. If not, it's something we should report to their texch support guys so that they can include it in their next version.
