Just for my own amusement I have started a little matte painting. Don't know how far it will go or what, if anything, it will be used for. Done in photoshop with mostly photographic elements and some quick 3D forms generated in 3d studio max. The actual piece is 1440 x 614 pixels (2.35 : 1 AR). Still a long way to go.

Below is the 3D element created in 3d studio max

Some updates - reworked the waves around the pillars and added more foam to the lefthand waves. More cloud work. More shadow and aging on the pillars. Ignore the colour shift for the moment, final tonings are a ways off.

More clouds, rocks on the right-hand side, and matching foam to blend it in.

Last update for the night. More cloud work, more foam - splashes and wash - and a big ol' stone head, dirt and shadow work on the ruins. Also a layer of rain, although it might be too subtle at this size.

Total time now at 3 hours 20 minutes

This is the current state at full resolution. Not sure where I'll go from here, or if I'll leave it be at this point, and come back at a later date.
