  1. When I play some vhs tapes in my jvc vcr with the tbc switched on it'll cause a distortion at the top of the picture. Can I assume nothing can be done about this?

And if you turn the TBC off ?

  4. I've had this same issue with some of my older home movies. It's too bad, because in many cases turning the TBC off leaves you with all of the problems you had without the TBC (besides this new issue). Nevertheless, I think it's a rare (but known) issue with the JVC TBC in all models. My first guess would be that a Panasonic ES10 would fix this, but I am not sure that is the case. As far as I know it will only fix it when you are getting the distortion with the TBC off and that it won't fix one the TBC creates itself.

I would try another VCR with a TBC in this case. Let me know if you can solve this though as I still have a few tapes that I can't decide what problems I want to live with.

Same thing here. I have a JVC pro deck with builtin TBC and sometimes you have to do a different combination of settings with the TBC on/off, jitter control on/off, and one other setting that escapes me. Usually there is a combination that will work 90% of the time. But there is that nagging 10%...

In my experience, the Pan ES10 does nothing to fix the distortion.

The only way I know of to fix this issue is to literally buy another jvc svhs player use it to play your tapes that have this problem and then return it for a refund. The problem appears to only occur once the heads are no longer perfectly clean. I know this because I've had tapes play perfectly with the TBC turned on and then later on crap out on me. The problem is finding out which tapes to do first. Sometimes you don't find out until it's too late.
