I know that the Oppo DV-983H is the end all of upscaling DVD players, and you can't even buy it yet. But the price of $399.00 is just a bit much for me to invest. I'm not willing to pay for an upscaling DVD player that is the same price as a Blu Ray DVD player. I'm not THAT much of a videophile. But I have about 5,000 movies on DVD, and would be willing to pay anything UNDER $399.00. I would like to know what the next best options would be. I would appreciate any information on what players out there are considered the "best" upscaling DVD players. And I'd like it to be able to play Xvid/Divx files too.

For $400.00 you're better off buying a Sony PS3 for Blu-ray. I have 2 Sony upscaling dvd players which work great but they don't do divx. I have the first generation upscaling dvd model Sony NS75H & also the latest model NS77H. Costco also sells the Sony model DVPNS72HP for $79.99 that comes w/the HDMI cable. The model is the same as the NS77H only difference is the HDMI cable and this model is manufactured specifically for Costco.

The Pioneer DV-400V-K is a popular model which has divx playback. They have it at Best Buy and at Walmart which is the cheapest at $69.99 for black model and $79.99 for a sliver model.

IMHO for upscaling dvd players there's really no need to spend big bucks. If you want more information on best upconverting dvd players check out the AVS Forums, Dvd Players Standard Def threads. Just my 2 cents!
