I have a Sony DCR-Sr200 Handycam (output is mpeg2 files), my brother-in-law has a Sony HDR-SR (output m2ts files) can I combine these? We both took video at my parents 50th Annv. I thought because we were both shooting with Sony camcorders that I could just read his files...turns out I can't. I have Motionpicture vers 2.0.06.13151 it doesn't recognize m2ts files. Any ideas?

Combine and make a dvd? or just combine and make mpeg2 files?

You picked the two most difficult formats to edit. I'd have difficulty with that project.
Are you up for heavy lifting?
I'd go at it with Vegas Pro 8 because that is what I know. First you need to pick a SD or HD project format and strategy. Assuming a SD DVD target, I'd transcode each source to Cineform, edit/filter/process in Cineform format, then output to MPeg2 for DVD.
For simple cuts editing, Womble products might work.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

vs11+ just might do it
I'm using it now and it seems to combine just about everything I throw at it on the timeline -
You can convert the .M2TS files to an easier to edit format.
Change the extensions to .MTS and have a look at this guide:

Probably the only bright spot here, is they should both be TFF field order........
Soopafresh has the right idea. Use his tools to downsample m2ts into the same resolution as the Mpeg-2 camera. That should keep them on similar footings. Of course the colors will not match...........Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........
