i apologize if this has been covered, but the search function just brings up a blank page for me. but when i convert an xvid file to dvd using mpeg2enc, it makes a video_ts folder, mpg file, m2v file, and the ac3 file. i'm using toast to burn the dvd, and it seems to me that all i'd need is the mpg file. i'm not sure if i'm doing something wrong to create all the other files or if i should be using the other files somehow. i opened the ts folder in dvdplayer and it said the video was only 20 min long and the file is really about 40 min long...like the mpg file is. any assistance would be appreciated.

mpeg2enc first converts the video from the source file to an .m2v file, then the audio to an .ac3 file, then multiplexes those to an .mpg file, then authors that as a VIDEO_TS folder.
Uncheck "Keep Elementary Streams" in the ffmpegX menu to automatically delete the .m2v and .ac3 files after processing.
If you want Toast to author the DVD, then you may uncheck the Author checkbox in the Options tab, so that ffmpegX won't generate a VIDEO_TS folder.

True, Toast will make a DVD out of just the .mpg file, the other files can be discarded.

Check to see if some part is really missing. The player may have misread the duration, but play full length anyway.

Thank you for the information. That's exactly what I was looking for. I really appreciate it.
