i have an onkyo dv-sp404 dvd player and i'm fooling around w/ video conversions. i have an olevia 532h TV and i kinda wanted to see what some of the HD trailers on apple would look like on the TV. i downloaded a bunch of 720p trailers and used Super C to convert them to xvid format, but the player won't display the video, just the audio. i get a message on the screen that says 'the video resolution of this file is not supported.'

i tried lookin thru the manual to see what the max resolution, and max bitrates are that are supported by this DVD player for divx files but theres no info there that i could find. i tried to email them to ask but their feedback form on onkyo.com times out everytime i try to submit it. i even called onkyo support and after about a 25-30 min wait in the queue the tech put me on hold for another 5 mins or so and came back to tell me that if the file doesn't play at the resolution i've converted it to i need to keep trying lower resolutions until the player reads it, which i felt was a pathetic excuse for a resolution. when i asked what are the max resolutions and bitrates supported by the player again he said that information is not available to them...!?!?!?! how can that info not be available to them, it's their player?

so anyway, does anybody know what the max resolution and audio/video bitrates are for divx/vxid playback on the onkyo dv-sp404 player?

So, your location is "hell". Not funny, but I'll help you anyway.

Almost nothing supports HD Dvix playback, so your experience is typical. The general resolution rules apply. If you bothered to read the forums in the 5.5+ years since you joined, you'd know about this as we talk about it all the time and we get posts likes yours all the time.

Anything with a resolution above 720x576 probably won't play. If you go a little above 720 in width and reduce the height, it might work. For example, something like 800x360 might play. If you exceed both 720 and 576 in your file's resolution, it will never work.

Video bit rates above 2000 Kbps are often problematic. MP3 VBR audio sometimes won't sync correctly. If you use MP3 CBR audio you can usually use video bit rates close to 2000 Kbps. If your audio is anything other than MP3, you'll probably have to reduce the video bit rate or you may have playback problems (sync issues, stuttering, etc. are possible). You may have to reduce the video bit rate as low as 1400 Kbps for some audio sources (DTS and possibly even AC3). Not sure about PCM audio as while it is possible to use this with Divx, nobody does since PCM audio is very big. I would expect that you'd have to reduce the video bit rate to get PCM audio to play OK.

You can count on one hand the number of DVD players that can playback HD Divx files. They are all expensive. http://www.divx.com has a list of some of the players. Some media streamers can play HD Divx files, but even the cheapest will cost at least $200.

Connecting a PC to your TV is your cheapest way to do this. You can use the TV as a monitor and play the files on your PC and you will see them in HD that way.

well, i guess i should say thinks for the info, but the arrogance in your response makes that a little hard to do. yea, i joined the forums in 2002 but that doesn't mean i spend my life here. if you look at my profile you'll see my total postings is a whopping 14 including this 1. i'll admit i'm not very experienced w/ video editing and such, but when i get curious about how to do something i check out the guides on this site, but the only time i really come into the forums is when i get stuck w/ something and ask for some help from people who have the know-how. and thanks for lookin out about my location, i guess my profile is a little out-dated, i'll get right on it!

with that little rant aside, thanks for lowering yourself to my level of patheticness for a few short moments of your life to (kind of) help me out. i wish there was something i could do to give you back those precious wasted minutes you had to throw away reading and then replying to my ignorant post, but i guess you already know how retarded i am and have nothing of value to offer you in return.
