How to do Onkyo DV-SP404 region free?

Does anybody know how to do an Onkyo DV-SP404 region free??
I have tried the 3690 code without success...

Having just bought the 404 for the Divx capability, and doing a little research, I do think that the player is not easily hacked. The European models respond to the hack but not the US model. I'm wondering if the Pioneer mod would work on the Onkyo...

It would be nice to have it region free, but I can live without since I have an out-of-the-box region-free player. My issue with the player is the display of the srt subs. They are very small, and they seem not to honor the timing track of the subtitle file. They either appear too early, too late or disappear quickly. What I'd like is a firmware upgrade to fix the subtitle issue. I cal live with the small subs, but cannot live with the files being out of time. Still debating if I should keep it or not.

Any suggestions are most welcome.

Oh yes, to the original poster, sorry I cannot help with the region free thing... I'm in the same boat as you. Dammed MPAA anyway!

Well after thinking a lot about if i should use the Pioneer fw for my Onkyo DV-SP404 (US model), i decided to use it!!. Then i downloaded the fw from www.pioneer.info (DV-490V) and i used it.

I had no problems with it!, but my DVD is still region 1.

Now the problem i have is with the original remote control!, i was wondering if there is a way to program the DVD player to accept the codes from the original remote control.

Once i upgraded with the Pioneer firmware i suppose it is normal not to recognize the Onkyo codes. Anyway i am using my Onkyo remote control from the receiver.

Finally my DV-SP404 is region free!!!!!!!
I installed the lastest version (v2.2) of the DV-490V firmware mod by Hakan found at http://www.pioneerfaq.info/english/dv490.php?player=DV-490V&question=Firmwares .

Glad to hear you got it fixed. I actually took mine back. The Divx srt subs would not stay in time ( the srt file was perfectly timed) and the aspect ratio was stretched. Not good... so I bought a cheap Magnavox 7006 and it plays Divx files perfectly and the subs stay in time. And what's even more amazing is that it displays 3 lines of subs, something most players won't do. Only drawback is the dreaded white on white... they should fix that.

And while I'm on the subject, the Samsung DVD recorded had the best display of srt subtitles. That player did it well, but it did not maintain the aspect ratio. It stretched the image. I took that one back too!

I also wanted to make my Onkyo DV-SP404 region free, so I installed version 3.3 of the DV-490 firmware mod by Hakan (latest version found at pioneerfaq.info).
I followed all the instructions and I did get the Pioneer screen, but my DV-SP404 is still not region free!
In the instructions I read that I need to press the small enter key on the remote control. The problem is I don't have this key on my remote (I'm using my Onkyo TX-SR604 remote).

Any one has an idea how I can make my Onyo DV-SP404 region free?

Use the button on the equipment. It works!. Anyway, there is a new firmware that accept the original remote control.

I downloaded v5.0 from Hakan, but it still wasn't region free. Now I can't use my original DVD remote. I can't find the original firmware from Onkyo or anywhere's on the web.

Is there anyway to revert this back or be able to use my original remote?

Hi every one,

I'm trying to update my region 1 onkyo dv-sp404 player with the v5.0 firmware, but everytime I put the disc in the player, the player would go off... Any idea? I'm pretty sure I followed the pioneerfaq burn guide perfectly
The only difference with all the info I can read is that my current rom version is YEB6824. Does that make any difference ?
