Using Ulead software to capture from my vcr. The capture button is greyed unless I attach my dvcamcorder via firewire. I am trying to use this software for the sole purpose of capturing vhs.
I am wondering if I am missing a capture driver...I don't see a source setting in the software...also wondering if I need to install ASUSLive before this software will work with my card.
I am sorry to ramble like this...there was "no such manual" provided and after going thru many posts, I have not seen this problem.
Any help would be appreciated.

I've got Asus7100 DeLuxe Combo.
For you it will be almost the same as with me.
First, I must say, Asus SUCKS! It only works good enough if your using it with Win98SE or WinME (not in NT4, nor w95 nor w2K).
Yes, you need to install ASUSLive, this because AsusLive will install the necessary CODEC's of Asus for capturing.
If you've got w98se or wME, installing AsusLive will automaticly install the Capture devicedrivers.
If you're using wNT (4 or 2k), you need to install the Asus' drivers for VfW. You only can capture using AsusLive (alo with NTFS, max. 2Gb per piece) and only using standard VCD-quality, the quality is suitable (no dropped frames). Any other size (like 640x480 or SVCD) you'll get 150 dropped frames for every 180 captured frames (worthless)!
Why this? Because Asus' Capture cards doesn't do onboard precompression (everything goes directly through the CPU of your motherboard).

I have a V6800 Deluxe, and as Betamax said, make sure the ASUS Video Codec(s) are installed - Installing ASUSLive should install the proper codecs for you. Once you get your card working properly, install the HuffYUV compression codec and use it, as it does less compression than the ASUS codec (which will result in a better quality capture even at its default settings) - The quality of the final S/VCD will be determined mostly by the quality of the source material.
Throw the Ulead away, and use VirtualDub for capturing - Multisegment (no filesize limits) and frameserver support, its 1000x better than Ulead for capturing and plain editing imo.

Have been gone for the day and I was so glad to find detailed responses to my question/problem. Thank you! As I said, I am just getting started with this, but tg I found this forum several months ago. Far surpasses any freakin' manual anyway.
I will gladly "lose" ulead to try your suggestions! Hope to master this analog stuff well enuf to meet purposes. Better get started..I have some catching up to do and don't want everyone else to be havin' all the fun...especially now that I know I'm not completely crazy!

Uninstalled the ulead stuff, downloaded from asus the latest asuslive (4.6.0.0) and installed. However, when I try to run the program, I get the illegal operation message:

Do you know anything about this? The asus forum imo is difficult to navigate...grrr. I was wondering about possible problems with the vfw drivers: microsoft kb article: Q192112:video capture wdm driver does not work in windows 98.
I have the files vfwwdm32.dll (ver 4.10.222) and vfwwdm.drv (ver 4.10.2222) in my windows/system folder...
have you ever seen this or have any ideas?

I'm not sure what program I2C.DLL belongs too (maybe something to do with ULead?), but try the LATEST ASUS drivers from their FTP (they hardly ever update their webpage...big suprise)...
ftp://ftp.asus.com/Pub/ASUS/beta/vga
You are using Win98, so you'll want to download:
- w9x1290.zip (Windows 9X v12.90 drivers)
- live46b5.zip (ASUSLive 4.6b5)
Also, reinstall DirectX from Microsoft (www.microsoft.com/directx) even if you are running the latest version, redownload it and reinstall it anyway. THEN update your ASUS drivers to 12.90, and finally install ASUSLive.
Hopefully that will help you out. Good luck

Took awhile as I'm on the "learn as you go" plan,,,but your sequence WORKED! I am now able to open the program.
Not only did I dnld the most recent dx8, but also the video capture update for dx8 (also from the site in your reply).
Now hope to get some browsing and reading done...thanks for the great suggestions!

ps the I2c.dll that was involved in the invalid page fault was in the list of shared files on the un-install of asuslive.
