  1. I have a video file that has no audio in Quicktime or iDVD but does have audio if played through a VLC player, is there something I can do to get the audio to work on iDVD and Quicktime?

Use mediaInfo to determine what the audio is. Chances are it is a codec issue. VLC travels with it's own codecs, and doesn't rely on the system codecs be present and accounted for. Mediainfo will tell you what you need, and you can then work out how best to fix it.

if you are on MacOS X, drop "AC3 Codec.component" into /Library/QuickTime, or if you are on MacOS 8.x/9.x, drop "AC3 Codec" into your Extensions folder and restart

  5. depending on your container, the component has no effect (Perian codec will install it to you).
I rocks for avi with AC3 audio.
But don't work with MPEG (video + audio multiplexed) with ac3 audio (because Perian does not handle its decoding, it's made by Apple's mpeg2component).

The Monkees said s/he had no audio, so I doubt MPEG-2 video is the problem here. More likely this concerns an AVI with XviD/AC3.

The AC3 Codec Component is old (2004). One would be better off with the more recent (2007-07) A52 Codec component, which does roughly the same thing, but is more actively maintained, thus has better features and compatibility. If you do install it, remove the old one, so they don't conflict.

sorry, I was thinking since iDVD was mentioned that it was an already
authored MPEG-2 stream, not an xvid file with ac3, since last I knew,
iDVD will not directly accept .avi files?
