  1. I downloaded a copy of the open source Dr.DivX, v2.0.1 (beta 7), which will not work...convert video files without a DivX codec (one that encodes). It seems silly to develop conversion freeware that requires purchase of a codec to make it work. I must be overlooking something. DivX converter already does what Dr.DivX claims to do. To buy a codec that comes with a converter app to make a freeware version run is like buying a car that runs to tow one that's free. That's nuts!

    (1) Does anybody know from where I could download a freeware codec for encoding wth Dr. DivX? If so, (2) would the codec need to be installed in C:\WindowsSystem32 ???

I was thinking of performing a custom installation of the K-Lite code pack, excluding all but the DivX encoder (if that's possible or would work).

I don't mind buying DivX v6.8, but Dr.DivX offers better compression--I installed a trial version of DivX (v6.8) then ran Dr.DivX. It then worked fine. After downloading a DivX codec, v5.2.1 for XP, I ran the executable; but Dr. DivX failed to run. Any ideas?

There is a free version of of Divx 6.8 you can use. Slightly less configuration, but the main profiles work fine.

Don't use a codec pack to fix a simple problem.

You can also use AutoGK or AlltoAVI to convert to Xvid instead.
