But they don't all actually play VCDs.

The Toshiba SD1009 doesn't although the compatibility list says it does.

The SD1200 plays VCDs and XVCDs (352x240) well but no SVCDs. The picture quality's good too.

  4. My sampo player wasn't very expensive, and plays
anything I throw at it. Some early models were said
to have various audio problems (something to
do with the particular brand of dvd drive inside
I think) but mine doesn't seem to be affected.

I got mine from buy.com, but I don't know if they're sold there
    anymore.

It is exacyly the same as the afreey player.

The various apex players seem to have a good reputation,
although I think I read somewhere that some early models
couldn't do seamless branching-- I don't own one, though,
    so I can't comment.

  5. I have an Apex AD703 and love it. THere are DVD players that might get a better picture, but none more flexible. It plays damned near everything I throw in there, VCD, xVCD, SVCD, xSVCD, DVDs, ISO discs full of MP3s. I paid about $180 for my 703, a 3 disc changer. The 660 which is a single disc player runs about $130
