Some brief info on a new smaller/cheaper Bluray reader that is scheduled to be released on laptop later this year:

    http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/25/sony-announces-new-blu-ray-module-should-drive-down-costs/

Let's wait and see if Sony will pass on the lower cost to consumers or they may not do so with the potential market monopoly (helped by major movie studios)

Let's start with the PS3 at it's rumored $299 price, down from it's current $399.

Then we can see stand alone BluRay players at $199, down from the market average of $299.

Don't think that BluRay will pull a Toshiba on the market like in Q3-Q4 2007, Sony is way too big with too much invested on the front and back side for this to happen.

My wish list for BluRay: a portable unit with a 10" screen.
    affordable BluRay standalone recorder
affordable BlueRay drives for computer use.

    Cheers!

I have read somewhere that Sony has been selling the PS3 at a loss to make back the revenue in PS3 games and the high-def market. Not sure how much more they plan to lower the PS3 prices...

If Sony does that then the PS3 will certainly fly off the shelves. That was the starting price of all its predecessors. It will also make it technically cheaper than the 360. The one thing I don't like is that they intentionally crippled the PS3 just to get it down to $399.

Also, there was no need for it to be $600 in the first place. It is ridiculous that people bought it as a cheap BluRay player. It is a video game system that Sony unnecessarily made ludicrously expensive just out of greed. What these people did was tell Sony that it was OK in doing that.

  6. Looking forward to this HiDef revolution to get geared up already. I'll be moving out of soon and when I do ima buy myself a nice big HiDef LCD.
I can't wait to see movies/TV series in Hi Def. Also a writer that gives me the neccesary space would be looooong overdue, 4.3 gigs is just becomming laughable. Theres 16 gigs USB sticks out there at reasonable prices!

Sony responded to similar questions was that users who aready had a PS2 can continue to play PS2 games on the PS2, and PS3 purchasers are mainly interested in the high-def PS3 games.

Not as long as Blu-Ray stays proprietary. Big difference between an "open" format and a closed one. No China either, so fat chance on cheap players.

That makes no sense at all. Especially considering the BluRay drive that's in the thing. I'm sure that costs way more than PS2 compatibility. What does BluRay have to do with PS3 games?

Yeah they want you to buy a 100.00 replacement ps2 if yours dies instead of being able to play it on a ps3. SO if you don't have a ps3 that has backward compatilibity your screwed into having more consoles.

Unfortunately the Xbox 360 is sort of that way now. It only has x number of Xbox 1 titles it can play in emulation. I actually haven't played any 1 games on my 360 so I don't know how well it works. But then again at least as far as I know all the newer versions of the 360 still work with the offical list of Xbox 1 games that work on the 360.

What advantage would you see from Blu-ray on a 10" screen?
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

  15. as long as Blue crap stays Sony's crap, you won't see it cheaper, they could build billions of them and still would be expensive...

just like a regular dvd, sony is double the price, and the same shitty quality....but people still buy them.

    Sony's crap marketing and ideas....
