    Hi,

I wouldnt say I am a newbie at all the converting, authoring and ripping of movies etc but lately I have come across a few downloads for movie that are being supplied with the very narrow film size or aspect, about 1/3 of the screen is the movie and the other 2 3rds are black bars.

Lately, no matter what I try I have not been able to adjust the aspect at all, I usually adjust them a little so they dont turn out so bad, sorta the 40 to 45% mark, they still look ok with a slight aspect wierdness but definately not the conehead look.

I was happy with doing this for a long long time. Either the files I have are embedded with a flag that cant be adjusted or the programs I am using arnt doing the job.

Is there a program out there that will convert xvid to dvd compliant files, allowing the creation of simple dvd menus with backgrounds you can choose or create, will give you the ability to edit or adjust the aspect of the original file to another aspect and actually show you the difference visually.

Please let me know, I am tired of these good quality ( visually ) files that are so narrow, releasers of these type movies should be shot by the way, what a pain in the you know where !

The problem is simple - morons. Too many morons out there badly encoding video to get into 'the scene' with little or no idea what they are doing.

Frankly, if they are in that state to begin with, why bother trying to rescue them. If they are out there for download then they are most likely also available at the correct aspect ratio and a much higher quality at your local video store, or failing that, Amazon.

Stop downloading crap from morons and wasting your time trying to undo what they have done.

    Either that, or learn avisynth.

  3. Many (most?) movies are shot wider than 16:9 and will not fill a 16:9 screen, much less a 4:3 screen, if viewed properly.

If you're watching on a widescreen computer monitor -- most of them at 16:10 so even 16:9 material will have black bars top and bottom.

It's not improbable that at least 50% of the incompetent releasers are in fact
    unofficial MPAA employees
