Probably a newb question here...but I searched the forums and couldn't find an answer.

On a couple of Divx video files, the video is great but the audio is almost in fast forward and very choppy. Nothing can be understood. I've tried the newest version of Divx Player and Winamp/WMP. I ran the file through Gspot and found the audio to be AC3, 48000Hz, 224 kb/s, stereo. The codecs/filters are properly installed.

    Any suggestions?

Try play with VLC Media Player and see if works okey, it has builtin codecs. Or it could just be a crappy made divx.

It works in VLC! Does this mean when I burn it to disc, the audio will be ok? I've got a standalone Divx player

Not necessarily. But it probably means your installed AC3 codecs have a problem. Is AC3 compatible with your Divx player? If so, I would give it a try.
