I just bought a Canon HV20 HD camcorder and edited it with studio 11 and burned it to a disc. It will not play on my HDTV through my PS3 or my dvd player. I believe I made a big mistake buying this equipment. DoI need a HD DVD player or do I burn a different format. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Sounds like you didn't author the disc properly.
Editing isn't the same as authoring.

I don't think you made a mistake buying the equipment. It just needs to be setup properly. Then you're home free.
Pinnacle Studio 11's option to burn 20 minutes of HDV to a DVD?
You can always take the disk to Circuit City or somesuch to see if it plays on their equipment for example...and go from there.
Also, the media used makes a huge difference...

slow down and learn a bit before you panic. first if you want to play what you shot in HD then the easiest way by far is to play the tape with the cam directly connected to the tv with the cable that came with it. if you want to play it from dvd you best you can do is shoot in SD and transfer that to the computer in dvavi format and then transcode to mpeg-2, author to dvd specs and then burn to dvdr. if you really want to have HD footage you pretty much need to buy a blu-ray burner for the computer and blu-ray blank discs. add to that an HD encoder and HD authoring program.

I already own a PS3, 60" Sony HDTV,Canon HV 20 camcorder and Studio 11 Ultimate. I guess all I need is a Blu-Ray burner for my computer and some Blu_Discs. Is this correct? Next year it will be something different. You just can't keep up with high tech without deep pockets and mine are empty for the moment.

you might try zoobie's suggestion about the dvdr media for studio 11. verbatim dvd-r 16x is about as compatible with most standalones as you can get. give some a shot.

    * Pinnacle recommends installing the 11.1.1 Update for the Studio 11.0, Studio 11.0 Plus and Studio 11.0 Ultimate versions.
    * Note : you can also install the 11.1.1 Release patch if you previously installed a Sudio 11.1 patch. Studio 11.1.1 includes all fixes and improvements of Studio 11.1

The Studio 11.1.1 update contains many enhancements for the edit performance with AVCHD material as well as offering NEW support for AVCHD Disc output.
An AVCHD Disc is the AVCHD video format burned on standard DVD media which can be played in Blu-ray disc players.
Well, you're not burning AVCHD either...
again, try playing your disk at Circuit City or somesuch using their blu-ray player and see what happens

I don't trust anything Pinnacle says so you need to defend your purchase.

    You have a Canon HV20 and a PS3 if I read correctly.

    Your turn:
Does Pinnacle support BluRay output and do you have a BlueRay burner and BlueRay Media?

  11. I have the Canon HG10 and I use Pinnacle Studio 11 Plus. I have a Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player.

I have sucessfully used Studio Plus to burn my home videos onto a 16x DVD (hd-dvd format was selected) and played it on my HD-DVD player. The HD picture is OUTSTANDING.

The only problem using Studio Plus is that in the HD-DVD burn using standard DVD discs, I cannot generate a MENU. The created MENU does not sync with the location of the clips I would like to see. So, I do not use any menus. Otherwise, I am very satisfied with the quality of the video.

I am unaware of any software being able to burn your videos onto a DVD (Blu-ray format) disc. The only programs I have seen can only convert to a DVD (HD-DVD format). I believe that Nero 8 can burn to a standard Blu-ray disc, but I find that NeroVision is not as easy to use.

    You aren't rcguy1
Start your own post. This is confusing enough.

To play on a PS3, you need to author a standard DVD or a BluRay DVD.

I see nothing in the pinnacle 11 plus spec that mentions BluRay authoring.
    http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Home+Video/Studio+...ifications.htm

Sony Vegas Pro will author a Blu Ray disc (from timeline without menus), but you need a Blu-Ray Writer and Blue Ray media.
Sony Vegas Media Center Platinum will only export to the PSP (PlayStation®Portable) ...
    http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/products/product.asp?PID=447&PageID=88

Nero8 converts HDV video to AVCHD (ugh!) which then can be stored and played as a data file to BluRay disc if you have a burner and BluRay media.

Any other ideas for burning to BluRay?

It appears we have basically the same equipment. In answer to your questions:

    1) You do not need a HD-DVD player.
    2) You can burn it using the same Studio Plus to a standard DVD (it will convert HD video).

As edTV stated, more information is needed.

No, you didn't make a mistake.

Yes, you need an HD-DVD player to play an HD format DVD. However, you don't need an HD-DVD recorder. As diablo2003 points out, you can burn HD format DVD to a regular DVD and play it in an HD-DVD player at full HD resolution.

However, some people have reported a way of getting HDV onto HD-DVD so that it does play on a PS3:

  15. If your system has a DVD burner, Studio can create three types of DVD disc: standard (for DVD players), HD DVD format for HD DVD players, and AVCHD format for Blu-ray players.

If your system has an HD DVD recorder, you can record HD DVD format discs on any recordable media supported by the device.

Your standard DVD discs can be played back:

    · On any DVD player that can handle the recordable DVD format your burner creates. Most players can handle the common formats.

    · On a computer with a DVD drive and suitable playback software.

    · On any HD DVD player.

Your DVD disc in AVCHD format can be played back:

    · On the Panasonic DMP‑BD10, the Playstation 3, and most other Blu-ray players.

Unlike the other DVD formats, AVCHD movies do not support disc menus.

Your DVD or HD DVD disc in HD DVD format can be played back:

    · On any HD DVD player, including a drive-equipped Microsoft Xbox 360.

    · On a computer with an HD DVD drive and suitable playback software.

OK, we are agreed that most of these programs can convert an HDV transfer to a standard def DVD which can then be played universally on DVD players as 720x480 wide.

For HDV authoring to Blu-Ray, the options are slim (see Vegas 8 Pro or Premiere CS3).

AVCHD files will play on a Blu-Ray player as a data file.

Nero 8 claims to convert HDV to AVCHD so it can play on a BluRay player as a data file.

ULead Movie Factory and maybe Pinnacle Studio 11 plus may cut 20 min of HDV video to a a DVDR in HD DVD format for playback only on a HD DVD player.

    Any more news?

OK we posted at the same time. Are you saying Pinnacle Studio 11plus will also convert HDV to a AVCHD file for a BluRay data burn using third party software?* I don't see that in the Pinnacle spec. Would that BluRay burning software be Nero8?

    * This would require a BluRay player or PS3 to play back.

WOW! Now that is interesting. Just put your HDV.m2t in a folder named VIDEO and the PS3 will play them. That and raw AVCHD files

That only gets a few minutes (20-40) on regular DVD-5/9 media but is better than nothing. I can now borrow a BluRay writer but BluRay media cost is still $16-20 for 25GB.
