i have external subtitles for a dvd that i want to hardsub. all i want to do is hardsub them into the dvd without any loss of quality. i see alot of guides for doing this for dvd->avi, but can't seem to find one for dvd->dvd.

    thanks

    solution found:

just convert vob files into mpg-2 (no loss of quality) using a tool like https://www.videohelp.com/tools/VOB2MPG

then, virtualdub it, adding the subtitles through filters. then frameserve.

then encode it (i used tmpgenc plus).

after you encode it you'll have a mpg-2 hard subbed.

now just author the dvd, and you'll have a nice dvd hard-subbed without loss of quality

Wrong. With quality loss. That run thru TMPGEnc reduced the quality. And why would anyone want hard subbed DVD? One of the features of the Video DVD format, is selectable "soft" subs. And those can be added without quality loss.

well with somewhat loss of quality, but its really not that noticeable, let me rephrase this...its good enough for my purposes.

reasons for hardcoded subs? recording dvd for people in a foreign country who may not know how to use dvd features. subtitles will always be used. have done soft subs in the past before, and people didn't know how to use them. so being safe and just hard coding subs. so believe it or not, just because you don't have reasons for it, others do.
