I am creating SVCDs from the VH-1 Classic channel. I capture on DV tape, then use TMPGEnc (TMPG) to convert using my own custom template. I created a library of about 50 videos, and was just beginning to creat SVCDs, when I found a "bug" in TMPGEnc. The bug is that when you load a new clip, it resets the output resolution to match the input. If you don't re-load the template, TMPGEnc will create the SVCD MPEG-2 file at 720x480 (the DV resolution) rather than 480x480 (SVCD resolution). I have long since erased the DV AVI files.
This brings me to my question: What method will allow me to convert from 720x480 to 480x480 with the least degradation in visual quality? I've used TMPGEnc to do the conversion, and the results are O.K. but not great. Is there a better way?
Thanks!
