I have a couple of mpeg-1 videos that I have downloaded on my Mac but I can't even view them, it says "The file is not a movie file" can anyone help me and tell me what this means? Does it mean I don't have the right codec for this video?

    Thanks for any help

Try to Play it with VLC.
    or use MpegStreamclip.

    Are the files properly downloaded?
Meaning did they completely finish downloading
or could they have possibly got corrupted when downloaded?

Considering that there is no way to be sure that your videos are MPEG-1 if you can't view them, I assume that you're talking about .mpg files. This extension (.mpg) is used for MPEG-2 videos as well, which would require the MPEG-2 component to be viewed with Quicktime. As this component is NOT free, I would suggest using VLC or mplayer instead.
