This is a simple and newbie question.

Those dvd players that will "upscale" the picture quality, is this for dvd media played with them?
What about signal coming from a standard stb box (coming in at 480i), can that be upconverted also?

Does this upconvertion really work and the picture quality is really better?

  2. Yes, upscaling players upscale regular DVDs to HD resolutions. They don't upscale external sources (an upscaling DVD recorder might). Whether the upscaling is better than the upscaling your HDTV does depends on a lot of things.

Also note that you are simply upscaling to HD resolutions, NOT creating HD quality video. The quality of the upconversion varies from player to player. Also, depending on your TV, it may already be upscaling and/or may do it better than a standalone player.

Right. I thought the upscaling on my NAD 534 was pretty bad. The Oppo 980 -- on the other hand -- does it pretty well, in many cases. There are other variable, though: the quality of the source and how well it was shot, whether originally shot on film or tape, etc.
When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.
