  1. Hi,

A couple of weeks ago, I installed Windows Media Player 10. I've been having problems with it. It stops playing files at random times.

It's not listed in Add/Remove Programs and there's no Uninstaller in its folder. How can I uninstall it and then reinstall a fresh copy of it?

Restore the computer to a previous date. Any programs that were installed after that date will have to be reinstalled.

  3. Since Windows Media Player is now at version 11, have you decided against it?

It seems to be more stable than version 10 on my systems using Win XP.

As Megahurts suggests, you might roll your system back to a previous restore point before upgrading to 11 (if you choose to do so). If you can't roll back, upgrading to 11 might still correct your problems with version 10.

Don't know if this'll help, but I saw it in passing:
    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/wmp10arp.htm

I'd probably just install WMP11 over WMP10 - and with my luck, make things worse.

  5. I checked out your link Ai. It said "In Windows XP SP2, Windows Media Player 10 entry appears under the Windows XP - Software Updates section. You need to put a checkmark near the Show Updates box at the top. " When I did that, checked the box, Windows Media Player wasn't there. The updates are a mixture of numbers and letters. I'll have to do some research to see which one is for Windows Media Player 10.

    Thanks

I can't use System Restore because it doesn't go back far enough to the point when I installed the player. . . . thanks for that thought too.

I'm pretty upset that Microsoft created a program that can't be removed from my pc. It's not stated anywhere during the installation and no warning about it anywhere.

Thanks guys . . . appreciate your help and suggestions.

Read the rest of the page. It mentions how to add another uninstall reference for it if it isn't in Add/Remove Programs. Also, there's a .reg file at the bottom of the page you can merge into the system registry that'll do the process for you, if you'd rather not mess with the registry yourself.

  7. Thanks again Ai. It worked very well. When I click on a file and choose to open it with Windows Media Player, I get the installation wizard. )

Well, today I gave a try to WMP 10 --- and already uninstalled it
Much heavier and slower than the previous version! Completely unable
to play a DVD smoothly on my 1.5GHz Pentium IV.
However WMP is not 100%-evil: differently from MPC and VLC,
it still is prudent enough to NOT upsize the subtitle pics when playing back
    half-D1 MPEG. 8)

  9. At this point, it no longer matters. I decided to format my hdd. It had gotten to the point where it was going to install Windows when I heard a very loud snap coming from my pc. When I tried to open the DVD drive, it wouldn't open. I opened the case, unscrewed and removed my DVD drive and out came about 10 pieces of my Windows XP Pro X64 disk. I contacted Microsoft about a replacement but I don't know if it's under warranty. I also looked into replacing my DVD drive but I have a BenQ 1650 and want to get a Benq dw1655 but they're all sold out on the net, probably because of Christmas.

Does anyone know if there another DVD ROM drive that's equivalent to a BenQ dw1655. I've heard of ASUS but I don't know much about them.

  10. Well, I did it the easy way, or the hard way (some people might think). I formatted my pc. I had a few other quirks that were annoying me. The Microsft Media Player program is still in my pc but I won't install it. It's too bad that Microsoft makes it necessary to have the program in our pc's, just waiting to be installed, and giving us no way to remove it without causing problems to other programs.
