am trying to compress an MPEG video file in VirtualDub. For the audio, I select full processing mode and then choose the Fraunhofer IIS Codec, but the selectable bitrates only go up to 56 kb/s. I click the "Show All Formats" checkbox, and this does open up more bitrates, but all of them are still less than 56 kb/s. I was under the impression the Fraunhofer codec could do higher bitrates. Am I mistaken? If so, what audio codec should I be using? Thanks a lot.

The normal codec included with Windows only allows encoding up to 56kbps. You need the Fraunhofer IIS codec, PRO version. Grab DivX 3.11Alpha and install it (Pro is included with it), and it will unlock the other bitrates.
If they ever disappear from your choices, reinstall it (it means you've installed something that has overwritten the pro codec with the basic codec). -
there seems to be a couple of version of this codec i have 2 version advanced which only goes up to 56 kb/s i also have the professional version which alows up to 320kb/s so im guessing you just have the advanced version which comes with windows download the Kristal Studio codec Pack from the tools section that will help you out with what you want it allows encoding up to 320 kb/s
