  1. I am looking for a single program (or 2 programs if 1 won't do it) to convert HD transport streams to Mpg-2. Here is why I want this:

My kids destroy DVD's. So, I rip all my DVD's, and store them on a NAS in Mpg-2 format. Then, anyone in my house can watch my movies through one of the 4 Tivo's in the house. I have been doing this for years with standard DVD's with no issues, and everything works great. For Christmas, I got a Blu-Ray player, and will now start getting Blu-Ray disks. I may just lock these up from the kids, but I am experimenting with putting these on the NAS too. I also have a Series 3 Tivo, and it records in 1920x1080 Mpg-2. It can also play this size file from a NAS. So, my HD Tivo will allow me to watch in HD, with know quality loss. I DO NOT want to burn a back-up disk. I am paying under $20 for my Blu-Ray disks, and do not want to destroy the quality by putting them on a DVD-9, or spend $20 to burn them on a "back-up". I paid $12.50 for my last 2 disks, and I could buy a back-up cheaper than burning on. But, I can store this file on a NAS, have it be my "back-up", and play it through my Tivo for less.

SO, I have been reading through these forums for a week. I have been able to rip my Blu-Ray disks to my Hard Drive. When I rip a disk that is Mpg-2, I can just run that through Video Redo, and keep it Mpg-2 to play through my Tivo. But, I need to find programs to convert the other Transport streams (VC-1 and MP4-AVC) to Mpg-2, and to keep them in the 1920x1080 resolution. I know the rips are good, because I can play them from my hard drive. I have tried several conversion programs, but not one that does what I want. Here is what I can do:

    For the VC-1 ts:
It plays in Power DVD, but not VLC.
    It plays in Nero 8
Nero 8 will convert it to Nero Digital, but does not have a option for Mpg-2
Does not convert in Tmpeng Express 3, Elecard, or Cyberlink Power Encoder

    For the MP4-AVC ts:
Plays in VLC, but not Power DVD
    It plays in Nero 8
Nero 8 will convert it to Nero Digital, but does not have a option for Mpg-2
Does not convert in Tmpeng Express 3, or Cyberlink Power Encoder
Elecard WILL convert this, but does not let me keep it in 1920x1080 (it gives me 1440x1080)

Does anyone know of encoders that will take these input files, and give my the 1920x1080 mpg-2 out???

    Thanks

Maybe Avisynth with directshowsource(you need to be able to play the mp4,vc in wmv, install ffdshow, haali media splitter) and open and convert in hcenc.

But you wont be able to convert the BD+ titles.

then do not generate them (I'm serious).

Cool............Encoding advice, and free parenting advice to go along with it.

    Thanks!!! (I'm NOT serious)

  5. Midzuki, only a certain type of nerd loser would think kids are "generated". Maybe that's cllo tech talk in your world, but in the "non-super-loser" world it reveals you for what you are.

A kid who handles a DVD with respect is not a true kid! Yeah, I know, all you parenting experts who have no kids or have goofy little geek kids you generated will have your say but c'mon......

DVDs will eventually get ruined - they are a very non-durable media and as such a very poor way to keep info you want to use from time to time for a long time. Dude asked a very well thought out question, if you know nothing and can't help, then just keep quiet. I can't help, but figured I'd rip on Zuki for his stupid remark and in doing so at least get the thread back to the top to be seen and answered!

Bruce - BD+ encoded files currently can't be encoded to anything else. Baldrick is right. This is the state of the art BluRay encryption. I understand the concern about kids, but you'd really be better off to rent the DVD version of the film you own on BluRay, rip that, and encode it to VCD or shrink to fit on a single layer DVD rather than trying to encode BluRay rips. If you REALLY want to get into BluRay encodes, go to http://www.doom9.net and look at the forums there.

As far as the comments on Midzuki go, Midzuki has a unique, uh, "perspective" that has not made me a fan at times, but I can't honestly say either that I hate his posts or find them all unworthwhile. But that kind of post is somewhat typical.

  7. jman,

Thanks for suggesting doom9. I found a thread over there that appears to do what I want. I will have to download several trial versions to see if it really works on my files. But, it sounds like Tmpgenc 4 Express will do the conversion, if I have some cinepac HD codecs installed.

I understand what you are saying about just ripping a SD version for the media server (watching on Tivo). That way, I can watch it on my network on all the standard def Tivo's (the kids), and just pop in the BD disk if I want to watch in HD. But, your suggestion to rent that version and rip it won't fly. I only rip disks I own for my server, so I would have to buy both the HD, and SD version of the DVD. That is why I was looking for a way to convert only the one disk I own.

Well, off to try the doom9 method I read about.
