I have a new Philips upscaling DVD player DVP5982/37 I'm setting up and it states to set the DVD and my TV to progressive scan mode when setting up the DVD. I don't have a progressive scan mode selection on my Sharp (I think it may be auto), so do I just let the TV do it's thing auto, or what?

Just set the DVD player to the output format of your choice, the TV should recignize the format on its own. Assuming you choose a format that your TV supports, of course.

jimtnc,
Not that it matters since all LCD tvs are progressive, but I've got the next model up the 92U. It will support interlaced or progressive sorces on all component and hdmi ports. It'll handle whatever you've got.
The best a DVD can give you is its native 480p. Anything else needs to be upscaled to 1080 (your TVs native resolution) by the DVD player, or, let your TV do it. The Aquos actuall has a pretty good scalar. Although, I found that setting our Xbox360 (our standalone dvd player), hooked up via hdmi, to 1080p and letting it do the upscaling looks slightly.
So the answer is, it depends. Set your DVD player to 480p and see how it looks to have the TV scale it to 1080, or, set your DVD player to 1080 and see how it looks. My guess is, it won't make much - if any- difference. Once you go to progressive on the DVD player, it really all you need.Have a good one,
neomaine

I mentioned to him that the DVD had settings where you could change color, contrast, etc and he shared my feelings...stay clear of those settings and do it with the TV, then use the cable remote for everything else. I may try that.
Also, my DVD has an "auto" setting as opposed to setting it to 480/1080. Has anyone used this to any advantage? Thanks. -
Okay, another question and I hope I'm not pissing anyone off by posting twice. I've got component cables connected from the 5982 dvd to the Sharp. I'm trying to set the HDMI Video Setup on the dvd, but it won't let me have access to it...it's grayed out. Tried to press "HD Upscale" on the unit and it gave me some access error. Do I have to have HDMI cables connected in order to even get at this option to work?!?
Update:
Just talked to Phillips Support and they didn't know the answer to this question either. It's not written anywhere where I or they could find it. So, they told me the old stand-by answer I've heard in I/T all my career..."try it and see what happens". Geeeshh!! I could have said that. -
