I'm new at using After Effects, but something seems really off. I'll import some movie files and they'll have sound in the project file, but once I add them to the composition, their audio vanishes. The waveforms disappear, and I have no idea how to keep them! What should I do?

This happens with both .mov and .avi files, but it doesn't happen all the time; only with certain files.

differences in audio codecs between the files?
Do some use mp3 audio, some use ac3?
of the file types where the audio is intact,
what audio codec is being used?

Before I answer that, one other question...

Does After Effects sacrifice audio when there isn't a lot of memory on the computer? After clearing some space, suddenly some that were silent are showing waveforms...
