Ok here's the story. My computer froze up a few times last night prompting me to restart each time and eventually I got one blue screen after another and now when I restart I end up stuck at the scrolling Windows xp startup screen. I have changed the memory, reseeded hardware, etc and reverted the hard drive back several hours using goback and I still end up stuck on the startup screen. The only time when I can get into windows is safe mode. Nothing else works. Anyone know what has happened here?

memory timings set too fast can cause it, or corrupted registry, or any number of other things. go into the bios and reset the memory to a slow standard speed or by spid. while you're in there make sure all the other settings look ok. you can try the windows cd and use it's recovery function. or try restoring from a couple days ago.

Ok I just got a blue screen finally and it says gbfshook.sys is the culprit which is goback. Unfortunately I can't uninstall the program or do anything since I can't get into windows.

if you can't do anything else go in safemode and delete it.

You do not appear to be alone but this is the only forum I found with what appears to be a solution.

Seriously , get rid of roxio goback , it dose more harm than good , an inferior product .
Recover using system cd as aedipuss mentioned . -
I have found goback to be very useful although i don't often use it. It's the inferior OS that it's installed on that's the biggest problem. Anyway I've disabled it and I was able to log into windows only to get another blue screen with some other driver problem. I haven't been able to get back in since. I will try to repair with the xp cd and then I'll have to reinstall the os again. I upgraded to service 2 a couple of months ago and I wonder if this has anything to do with all this.

Sounds like something occurred which caused file corruption. It could be just the registry that's corrupt or the individual files/drivers on the HDD. The real problem is what caused the corruption, it could be software related or hardware (failing power supply, memory, failing HDD, etc.).
If the XP CD can repair the problem, then there won't be a need for a full reinstall. I doubt the service packs had anything to do with your issues. And Roxio products have had several issues with XP, especially if you also have Nero installed.Google is your Friend -
The virus scanning software products should add Roxio to their virus list and get rid of it when scanning. It's a nasty piece of work. Aside from its own serious bugs, Roxio has always had a nasty habit of damaging other applications in the same system as well as injecting problems into the OS.
