I used the hack so that this dvd player will play all region type DVD's. My question is, is it normal for the picture to be kind of jerky when there are camera moves when watching DVD from other region. I have a region 2 dvd and when I watched it, it seemed like there where frames missing in the film everything would jerk every few seconds. it is most noticable when there are camera moves such as pans or zooms, and during the credits they you can really tell because they keep jumping. the credits go smooth then jump then go smooth then jump like its catching up. Just wondering if this is normal or if there is something I can do to improve it.

Ok never mind I figured it out for my self. There is something they forget to mention in the Hack. You need to go into the system menu and change the the player to PAL or Multi for the picture to play normal.

Actually, changing the output video type is for setting the type of video that your TV can accept. Which in the US is NTSC for most TV's. Multi works most of the time but shouldn't affect playback quality.

The jerkiness you are referring to is the byproduct of converting a PAL format into NTSC format. Some players are better at this than others and don't have this issue.

gdave53925 - Unless you have one of those rare (for the USA anyway) multi-standard TVs (if you don't know that you have one, you don't), you need to set your video out to NTSC as Krispy Kritter suggests. Setting it to PAL probably won't work for you as that will send EVERYTHING out to your TV as PAL output. "Multi" does a "what goes in is what goes out" thing with no conversion. PAL in = PAL out in "multi" mode. NTSC in = NTSC out in "multi" mode. "Multi" usually works because probably 99% of US consumers don't play PAL DVDs, ever, but multi will totally fail for you if you try to play a PAL DVD and your TV can't handle PAL video.

If you intend to watch a lot of PAL DVDs, you might invest in a better player. Oppo (http://www.oppodigital.com) makes some very highly regarded players that are said to correctly convert between PAL and NTSC.
I can tell you from personal experience that Philips does this conversion as cheaply as possible by throwing away vertical video information. That is to say it simply chops away the top and bottom parts of the screen to get the image in line with NTSC specs. Better players like Oppo will resize the image.

I have a Philips DVD player and their players have worked well for me and my family, but they are cheap players and not really intended for serious video conversion between PAL and NTSC.

I have an Oppo 971, and yes, it plays back PAL discs very nicely.
