I have an .mpg file I'd like to put onto a DVD so that players can play it. I don't care about menus or anything... if it automatically starts playing the movie, that's fine. I'd like something free and simple... I don't need to edit it or do anything other than create a working DVD.

check the tools section on the left.

I think dvd author gui is one of the freebies that will work. Also if its just a short term deal check out some of the pay packages that have free trial periods.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

If the mpg is dvd compliant you can use an authoring tool like guifordvdauthor, gui4dvdauthor, dvdstyler maybe not simpliest tools but they are free. If it's not dvd compliant you need an all-in-one converter and authoring tool like dvd flick, favc.

DVDAuthor appears to be a UNIX only package. My home PC is Windows XP.

What are "some of the pay packages that have free trial periods"?

How would I know if it's compliant or not?

use gspot or avicodec to see if it is 720x480 mpeg2 with 48khz sound that is dvd spec for ntsc which is what us is.

check out things like tmpgenc dvd author and others that offer a trial period. They will say if they have a trial.

If you want to know about 'DVD compliant', look to the upper left on this page for 'WHAT IS' DVD. It will tell you the DVD specification, format and structure. You need to match the format. MPEG, etc.

DVD Author GUI or GUI for dvdauthor are Windows programs. They run on all Windows OSs.

If you want easy for authoring, then TMPGEnc DVD Author is one of the easiest.

If you want something even simpler, try ConvertXToDVD or other all-in-one converters that will accept MPEG files. A few are freeware like FAVC or similar. You would have to check their capabilities. But the standalone programs will most always give better quality.
