That is done in the authoring application, and it depends solely on the abilities of the authoring app. DVD Studio Pro, Ulead DVDWS2, Encore and DVD-Lab Pro can do this. Maybe some others. Many cannot.

    You have two choices.

    1. Use a simplified, 4 colour version of the icon so it becomes just a standard sub-picture. It won't look at good, but most authoring tools will be able to use it

    or

    2. Create a copy of the menu in each state that it can exist (i.e. one version of the menu for each icon position) and automatically switch menu pages as the user moves around. Depending on the application, this can involve a short or longer pause between changes. DVD Lab Pro, for instance, allows you to set each page up as a cell in a single menu object, os the change-over is very quick. Other tools will require each page to be a separate menu asset, which will mean a slower change between images.

You can do great single-color images, gradient-shaded too, using DVD Studio Pro. DVDWS2 is single-color, but you have a full palette to choose from, it's not just 4 colors total.
