I have a 700MB movie file and Gspot says that the file parameter is Xvid, 1000kbps. I want to experiment with using Virtual DubMod to reduce the file size, for example to 500MB. In Virtual DubMod, I choose Xvid compression, 700kbps and the projected file size is about 500MB. My question is: Will a Xvid, 700kbps video play in a DVD player (that plays Xvid)? Also, if I want to reduce the file size even further, how low can I make the Xvid bit rate and still have it play on a Xvid compatible DVD player?

I think it might depend on the model/specs of the DVD player.

You would be better off using the original source DVD to make your "smaller" XviD file as the 700MB XviD is already compressed. If you don't mind bad quality or blocky video artifacts go as low as you want

You could easily test a small file from virtualdubmod yourself, just use the mark in/ mark out sliders and test a 1 minute clip at a certain bitrate. It would only take few minutes. Then adjust the bitrate and try again.

 Cheers

It should unless you enabled some of the options that some players can't handle. Like GMC and QPEL.Originally Posted by jimdagys

Also, Xvid will bottom out on bitrate at some point. Depending on the video, somewhere around 200 kbps. Setting the bitrate lower than that bottom point will not make the file any smaller
